Making People Laugh: My Favorite Side Effect of Storytelling Workshops

What lovely smiles.

I have no idea what I said that caused these ladies to laugh. My guess is that I told a short story that was honest. And quite possibly embarrassing.

This photo was taken last week. I was lucky enough to deliver a keynote at a women’s conference sponsored by Happy Valley Launchbox and Penn State.

And so there we were, laughing and enjoying each others’ company. There’s nothing better than a room full of people learning, connecting, and laughing. That’s the magic of storytelling workshops for me. Sure, I love helping people learn new skills that will help them influence their teams, but what really makes this the best job ever is seeing everyone loosen up.

Storytelling isn’t just about words. It’s about connection. And nothing connects people faster than a good giggle. Sometimes I share funny stories or we do an improv game that nudges people out of their comfort zones. Or maybe someone makes a spontaneous comment. I love bringing humor into the learning process.

My workshops are designed to be fun and educational. We dive into storytelling techniques, but we also keep things light. When the room is buzzing with laughter, you can feel people relax and open up.

Although this keynote was only an hour long, I loved watching people go from feeling anxious to feeling comfortable. Most of them were in a room full of strangers and had no idea what I was going to ask them to do. That’s where the humor comes in. I get to teach them about a serious communication skill in a way that’s not always so serious.

And if you’d like to build your storytelling skills for business purposes, have a few laughs, and leave feeling energized, my workshops are where it’s at. I promise the workshop will be worth every minute you spend.
