Funny how one random meeting can change everything.

We’ve all been there.

We get invited to a networking event, a dinner, or something horrific like bingo.

And we wonder if that event is worth the time it will take to do your hair and makeup. And maybe even shower beforehand.

Let me say that yes, it’s worth the time. Because you never know.

I’d like to tell a short story about Dory.

Back in the fall of 2021, I went to Las Vegas for a retreat. At the time, I was in life coach training. There, I met Dory. And I loved her instantly. She was as tall as me too!

She said her other job was working in leadership development. I thought it sounded fabulous, so she got me connected with the company she works with in Boston.

They brought me to Boston for training in 2022, and soon enough, I started working as a contractor too. I get to run storytelling sessions for leaders at mind-wowing places like Harvard Exec Ed, Proctor & Gamble, Leidos, and Tractor Supply.

Best. Job. Ever. I get to travel to new places and work with smart and talented folks.

And that job led me to creating my own company, The Great Story Workshop.  And I also think that’s the best job ever.

That got me to thinking.

If I hadn’t taken that trip to Vegas, I would not have my own company now. I wouldn’t be teaching for Harvard Exec Ed through The Ariel Group.

I wouldn’t know about storytelling and how it relates to effective leadership.

One trip. Meeting one person.

And here’s the best part: even sharing this reflection reminds me of why storytelling matters so much at work. Stories make ideas stick. They turn abstract thoughts — like career growth and change into something relatable and memorable.

Whether you're leading a team, pitching an idea, or reflecting on your own path, storytelling isn't just a "nice to have.” It’s the bridge that connects information to emotion. It's what turns facts into meaning.

Each of us has a story. And often, it's even better than we realize. And that story of yours is just what someone else needs to hear to be inspired and motivated.

Here’s to Dory and random chance!

(We hadn’t seen each other since 2021 and recently connected in eastern PA for a yacht rock concert. And we plan to see each other soon at a NJ beach for a chick’s vacation.)
